I had Larry do a lot of work for me recently, I’m proud to say I don’t regret set paying what I payed, he took care of all of the dry rot I had in my subfloor then replaced the Sheetrock that was damaged and as well as the baseboards on my home, I also hired him again to build a deck for my house which he did an outstanding job, he’s capable of a lot and I highly recommend hiring him for your next project :)

“Cold Flooring” in the Sun: Myth or Reality?

“Cold Flooring” in the Sun: Myth or Reality?

In summer, you want to step out onto the terrace barefoot and avoid the heat. This leads to a popular question: is there a deck that doesn’t heat up at all in the sun? The short answer is no; any material will heat up in direct sunlight. However, the difference in heat can be quite […]

How to care for a wood or wood-polymer composite deck

How to care for a wood or wood-polymer composite deck

Yes, both wood and modern composite decks are designed to withstand the elements. But their lifespan and appearance directly depend on regular cleaning, proper chemical treatments, and careful winter maintenance. In the US, manufacturers’ recommendations are consistent: dirt and organic matter are the main enemies; harsh cleaning products and excessive water pressure are a common […]

Is Your Deck Poorly Built? Three Warning Signs to Check Today

Is Your Deck Poorly Built? Three Warning Signs to Check Today

A terrace isn’t just for relaxation. It’s a space subject to loads, wind, moisture, and cyclical heating. Errors in joints accumulate and then suddenly erupt: a wobbly fence, a sagging span, a damp “house joint.” Therefore, the reaction “we’ll figure it out some other time” is inappropriate. Our blog covers many topics related to home […]

Spring is the best time for a deck: start the season right

Spring is the best time for a deck: start the season right

Building a deck involves more than just choosing deck boards and railings. It also involves weather windows, soil management, delivery schedules, permits, and inspections. In spring, these factors combine to create a more predictable picture: the ground has thawed, temperatures have stabilized, and permit departments and contractors aren’t yet overwhelmed with summer requests. As a […]

Steel deck framing: the fire-safe solution your home really needs

Steel deck framing: the fire-safe solution your home really needs

Forest fires are becoming a reality in an increasing number of regions. Therefore, the discussion of decking has long since moved beyond aesthetics. The key lies not only in the decking, but in the foundation itself. It is the framework that determines the fire resistance of the entire structure and influences how it will respond […]

FAQ

01
Do I need a permit for a 6-foot cedar fence in Vancouver, WA?
Usually no. Clark County exempts residential fences at 6 ft or under. Over 6 ft or visibility-triangle locations trigger permits. We verify per project.
02
Who owns the fence between my yard and my neighbor's?
Depends on where it sits. If on the property line exactly, usually both owners have interest. Common practice: whoever paid for the fence owns it and is responsible for maintenance. We recommend clear conversations with neighbors before building on shared boundaries.
03
Can you install on a slope?
Yes. Two methods: (1) "stepped" fence follows the ground with each panel level, posts at different heights — traditional look. (2) "racked" fence parallels the ground continuously — modern look, slightly more expensive.
04
Cedar or vinyl in PNW climate?
Both work. Cedar has character and lower upfront cost, needs staining attention every 3-4 years. Vinyl costs 25-40% more upfront, zero maintenance, but fewer clients love the look on older homes. We bring samples during the estimate so you can touch both.
05
How long does installation take?
Most residential fences: 5-8 days of on-site work after permits. Large rural fences (1,000+ linear feet): 2-3 weeks. Schedule buffer: 2-4 weeks before we start from contract signing.
06
Do you remove the old fence?
Yes — included in most quotes. Cedar fence removal adds roughly $3-6/linear ft to the project total (dump fees + labor).
07
Can you match my existing fence on a neighbor's property?
Yes, if feasible. We photograph existing fence details, measure post spacing and board widths, and match. Sometimes manufacturer or cedar grade has changed over the years; we disclose where exact match isn't possible.

Fence Types We Install

Cedar privacy fence — classic PNW choice. 6 ft standard height, board-on-board or flat board styles. $35-55/linear ft installed for 6ft privacy. Cedar silvers to gray in 2-3 years unless stained annually. Lifespan 15-25 years with proper post base and ground contact treatment.

Horizontal cedar (modern) — same cedar but with horizontal slats instead of vertical. More contemporary look. Adds ~$5-10/linear ft for extra material and install time.

Vinyl privacy fence — 6 ft privacy vinyl. 30-year warranty typical. $45-70/linear ft installed. No staining, no rot. Slightly more industrial appearance — fits newer subdivisions well, looks out of place on older homes.

Aluminum decorative fence — 4-5 ft tall, powder-coated, picket-style or horizontal. $50-80/linear ft installed. Best for pool fences (meets code), front-yard ornamental, or properties where views matter.

Chain-link — utility fencing. Still requested for dog runs, back-of-property utility fences, or rental properties. $18-28/linear ft installed. Not usually residential main fence.

Split-rail / ranch style — 2-3 rail cedar, often with wire mesh for pet containment. Rural properties, acreage. $22-35/linear ft.

Composite fence panels — newer option, fiber-reinforced composite boards on aluminum posts. 25-30 year warranty, no maintenance. $60-95/linear ft. Premium price but premium longevity.

Privacy, Pool, Pet — Fence by Purpose

Privacy fence (most common): 6 ft cedar or vinyl. Board-on-board for cedar blocks sight lines completely. Flat-board cedar has ~5% gaps. Vinyl is solid.

Pool fence (code-required): Oregon and Washington require pool barriers. 48″ minimum height, self-closing / self-latching gate, 4″ maximum spacing, no footholds below 48″. We typically install aluminum decorative fences around pools — meets all code requirements and doesn’t trap moisture against the pool deck.

Pet fence: depends on pet. For most dogs, 4-5 ft cedar or horizontal with closed bottom (no dig-under gaps). For jumpers, 6 ft. Electric invisible fence not our scope — we do physical barriers only.

Deer fence (rural): 6-8 ft required to actually deter deer. We don’t often do full deer enclosures, but we’ve added deer-deterrent height to existing backyard fences in Amboy, Hockinson, rural Ridgefield.

Decorative / property line: 3-4 ft ornamental aluminum or cedar picket. Marks boundary without blocking views. $35-60/linear ft.

Permits & HOA Review

Clark County WA:

  • Fence under 6 ft on residential property: no permit usually required
  • Fence over 6 ft OR any fence in a visibility triangle at intersections: permit required
  • Setback from property line: typically 0-3 ft depending on zoning — check parcel zoning

Portland OR:

  • Fence up to 42″ (3.5 ft) in front yard: no permit
  • Fence up to 8 ft in rear/side yard: no permit
  • Fence over 8 ft OR special structural needs: permit required
  • Historic districts have additional review for street-facing fences

HOA review: Many Ridgefield, Vancouver, Beaverton, Happy Valley subdivisions have HOA design review. Material, color, height are commonly regulated. We prepare the HOA submittal (drawings, specs, samples) as part of our quote.

Neighbor coordination: When fences are on or near property lines, we recommend notifying neighbors. Not legally required in most jurisdictions but prevents disputes. We can help with “good neighbor” designs where the finished face alternates between properties.

Post Footings — The Part No One Sees

The biggest difference between a fence that lasts 20 years and one that leans in 5 is the post foundation. We do it the same way every time:

  • 4×4 cedar posts (or 4×4 steel for longer-lasting premium installs) — pressure-treated at ground contact
  • Hole depth: 30″ minimum for 6 ft fence. Clark County frost line is 18″, but we add margin for soil movement and long-term stability.
  • Hole diameter: 10″ minimum
  • Concrete-set in poured footing — mixed on-site, rodded to eliminate voids, crowned above grade for runoff
  • Post elevated on metal base plate (for premium cedar posts) — keeps wood out of direct soil contact, adds 10+ years to post life

Shortcut methods — post in a hole with gravel only, or concrete poured around a post without proper excavation — fail within 5-7 years in PNW clay soils.

Our Fence Build Process

Step 1: Estimate + site walk. We measure property line, locate utility markers (811 one-call before any digging), identify grade changes, and sketch 2-3 layout options.

Step 2: Material selection + HOA review prep. Cedar grade, vinyl color, height specifics. If HOA required, we prepare and submit.

Step 3: Permit if needed. Clark County, Portland, or city-specific.

Step 4: Utility mark-out (811 call placed 3 business days before dig).

Step 5: Post installation. Dig, set posts in concrete, verify plumb, let concrete cure 24-48 hours.

Step 6: Rail + board installation. Rails fastened to posts, boards installed (overlapping for board-on-board, consistent gap for flat board).

Step 7: Gates + hardware. Self-closing hinges where required, latches, locks.

Step 8: Finish. Stain cedar (or leave natural), touch-up paint on vinyl, final walkthrough.

Timeline: Most standard residential fences complete in 5-8 days from start of work. Permit + lead time adds 2-4 weeks upfront.
